Jan. 17, 2012 - If you are a parent wanting to choose a new school for your child to attend next year, the new school choice selection process begins at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17.

The first round of the choice selection period runs until Friday, Feb. 24. During that time, if you are new or returning to the school system, the parent of a rising kindergartner, or a parent who wants to change schools for next year, you may log onto the student assignment website, assignment.wcpss.net, investigate your options and make your choices.

Families that make their choices earlier in the selection process will not have an advantage over families that choose on a later date. You don't have to be the first in line!

Parents of rising kindergartners and students who do not attend WCPSS this year must pre-enroll their child at a nearby school or at WCPSS Central Office. We have information about required documentation at assignment.wcpss.net/enroll/newcomer. You will be given at least five school options providing traditional or year-round calendars, and you must rank your top five preferences for your child.

Parents of rising first through twelfth graders received notices of their preliminary school assignments in November. If you are satisfied with that assignment, you don't have to do anything. If you wish to make a change, you may choose from one to five schools, but you should only pick schools for which you'd be willing to give up your child's current assignment. If you get your choice, your child will be immediately assigned to that school for next year and that seat will be made available for another child.

First-round selection results will arrive by mail by Mar. 16. A second choice selection round will open on Mar. 19.
