Superintendent to Meet Municipal Leaders, Discuss Future Programs and Facilities
Sept. 21, 2011 - The Wake County Public School System is reaching out to the leadership and chambers of commerce of our 12 municipalities to discuss the facilities and programs package recently approved by the Wake County Board of Education. A series of meetings between WCPSS and municipal leadership begins on Thursday, Sept. 22, at 2 p.m. in the Apex Town Hall with mayors Keith Weatherly (Apex) and Dick Sears (Holly Springs), followed by a Sept. 30 update to the Wake County Chambers of Commerce Leadership Meeting, hosted by the Greater Raleigh Chamber. Future updates with other municipalities are currently being scheduled.
Superintendent Tony Tata will discuss the Board's approval on Tuesday of a school facilities proposal that includes:
- establishing two new single-gender leadership academies,
- transitioning Hilburn Drive Elementary to a K-8 school,
- planning for a K-5 science academy to open in 2013,
- exploring the establishment of a career and technical education school in 2013, and
- a number of school construction and temporary classroom space solutions, including an Apex high school, a Wake Forest elementary school, design of a North Raleigh elementary school, and beginning renovations to Cary High.
"Our municipalities have a vested interest in our schools," said Tata. "We look forward to engaging all of them to keep them abreast of construction and program initiatives. This is part of our continuing effort to engage our public and partners, including our elected and business leaders across Wake County."
