Parent and Student Summit Planned for Sept. 17

September 13, 2011 - Parents can help their children get off to the right start this school year by attending the Empowering Parents, Students and Communities Education Summit on Saturday, Sept. 17.

The summit will be in the auditorium of Enloe Magnet High School at 128 Clarendon Crescent in Raleigh. Register on site for the event beginning at 8 a.m. Presentations begin at 9 a.m. and continue until 12 p.m.

Dr. Sylvia Wilkins, WCPSS assistant superintendent, will share some ideas on helping students start the school year strong. Nancy Baenen of WCPSS will discuss student achievement data and retired NC education leader Dr. Dudley Flood will talk about empowering parents, students and communities.

Parents will receive information on literacy, math and leadership. In a breakout session just for students, Myron Burney of the University of North Carolina System will share ideas on what it takes to graduate high school and enter a state university.

The summit is free and open to all Wake County families. The Wake County Public School System Helping Hands Mentoring Program is the summit sponsor. The mentoring program pairs African-American men with African-American male students in elementary and middle schools.
