Leadership Academies, New Schools and New K-8 Academy Named

November 2, 2011 - The Wake County Board of Education yesterday named five new schools, including two innovative single-gender leadership academies, and renamed a sixth in line with its new mission.

The school board officially named the leadership academies the "Wake Young Men's Leadership Academy" and the "Wake Young Women's Leadership Academy." Both schools would serve students beginning in grade six. A partnership between WCPSS and William Peace University for siting and early college collaboration is being developed for their respective boards' approval.

The school board also named the E-20 elementary school site on Durant Road "Abbotts Creek Elementary," the E-25 elementary school site in north Wake Forest "Richland Creek Elementary," and the H-10 high school in Apex "West Apex High."

In addition, Hilburn Drive Elementary has been renamed "Hilburn Drive Academy" and will also be referred to as "a 21st Century STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) School" to reflect its new status serving students from kindergarten through eighth grade. Hilburn Drive Academy will begin admitting sixth-graders in the 2012-13 school year.

New school names are proposed by school system staff and chosen by the school board in line with Board Policy 2570, which generally requires schools to be named based on geographic location or other location-based identifiers.
