Farmington Woods Named Top Elementary Magnet School
May 17, 2011 – The Magnet Schools of America awarded Farmington Woods International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme Magnet Elementary the Elementary School of Excellence Award, the honor given to the top magnet elementary school in the nation.
Winston Pierce is principal of Farmington Woods IB PYP Magnet Elementary.
“I am so excited to get back to school to share this recognition with our entire school community!” said Pierce. “Our magnet program has the support of our district, our school staff and our school families and is imbedded in our school culture. We live our International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme each day through our motto "Learning Lasts a Lifetime." As a school, we are truly a diverse, global community focused on developing students prepared for the 21st century as global citizens. This award is an amazing recognition of the accomplishments of the wonderful people who are committed to our students' success and our school!”
Engraved on the award is “Magnet Schools of America DKH Consulting Services, Inc. Elementary Magnet School of Excellence Award for Commitment to Diversity, High Academic Standards and Curriculum Innovation.”
The award carries with it a $2,500 cash prize for the school. Farmington Woods was selected among 227 other magnet schools from around the country.
Farmington Woods was one of six WCPSS magnet schools Magnet Schools of America recognized as National Magnet Schools of Excellence for 2011. The other five schools are:

The Magnet Schools of America created an Honorable Mention category this year. East Garner IB-MYP Magnet Middle and Wiley International Studies Magnet Elementary were recognized as Honorable Mention Schools.
The 15 WCPSS schools were selected from a national field of more than 2,000 magnet schools. The schools choose to be considered for the competition that looks at innovative instructional strategies, student achievement, diversity goals, and parent and community involvement in the magnet school.
Magnet Schools of America is a national collaborative network of magnet schools that provide leadership for innovative instructional programs promoting equity, diversity, and academic excellence for all students in public school choice programs.
