Child Nutrition Services Mails Meal Benefit Applications to All Families

July 13, 2011 - Every household with a child in Wake County Schools will be mailed a Free & Reduced price meal application this year, to ensure all parents are fully informed of the benefits. The decision to mail to every household provides an opportunity for every qualified family to enroll in the federal program.

“We are mailing information directly to families and will work with schools to survey parents to ensure they have the chance to respond,” said Marilyn Moody, senior director of Child Nutrition Services. “The actual salary schedule will be on the application. Based on the number of family members, parents can determine if their salary income fits within those standards. We want to help families who are perhaps temporarily out of work, collecting unemployment or workers compensation, or any short-term situation that a family might be experiencing.”

The parents of year-round students began receiving the six-page packet of information the week of July 4. Families must apply each year to receive the benefits. Families with students on a traditional calendar will receive their mailing in August.

To assist families, schools and Child Nutrition Services will have additional copies of the forms, and Child Nutrition Services staff can help families complete the form. Parents can return the completed forms to their schools or to the Child Nutrition Services office address listed on the application.

All CNS cafeteria managers can assist families in completing the application. Child Nutrition Services has bilingual staff at the CNS offices located at 1551 Rock Quarry Road available to help families. The office hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, and the phone number is 856-2920.
