Leaders4Wake Internship Program Recruits University Students

December 9, 2011 - The Wake County Public School System will tap into the tremendous resources of Triangle universities and colleges by launching Leaders4Wake, a multidisciplinary internship program to provide university undergraduate and graduate students with experiences in the school system.

The program's goal is to prepare the interns, or Leaders, with the knowledge, tools and expertise that they can readily apply to future positions in education or other professions.

"Leaders4Wake will provide university students a unique opportunity to develop leadership skills and work with the leadership team of our school district," said Superintendent Tony Tata. "Talent is our region's most valuable asset. We will be able to tap into the unparalleled resources of the university and college students in our community and help our next generation's leaders see the critical importance of our education system to our children and our community."

The Leaders will work directly with members of the Superintendent's Leadership Team and attend team workshops. They will participate in leadership and professional development workshops. They will work on projects critical to the school system's daily operations.

The school system will seek Leaders who have a strong academic record, a knowledge of the school system's mission, vision and core beliefs and a strong passion for education and increasing student achievement. They will be problem solvers who can work independently and can work on a variety of tasks at the same time.

The spring 2012 internship will require students to work 15 hours per week from Feb. 6 to April 30. The deadline to apply is Feb. 1. The orientation for Leaders will be Feb. 6. Applicants must provide a resume, complete an application, provide written responses to several questions, verify enrollment at a college or university during the period of the internship and complete the school system's volunteer system application, which includes a criminal background check.

The summer 2012 internship seeks Leaders committing to 35 hours per week from June 4 to August 10. The application process for the summer program will open in March.

While Leaders4Wake is an unpaid internship, students will gain experience and knowledge they can use in their current field of study. Students may receive approval from their college or university for use of the program as credit hours.
