WCPSS Teachers Renew National Board Certification

December 15, 2011 – Seventy-two Wake County Public School System educators earned renewal of their certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards this year.

After 10 years, National Board certified teachers must submit a portfolio of their accomplishments as teacher leaders to maintain the distinction. Teachers typically begin the renewal process in the eighth year of certification. As in the initial certification, impact on student achievement remains the focus. Renewal candidates complete the National Board’s Profile of Professional Growth submitting videos demonstrating their teaching and providing evidence of how they have positively impacted student achievement since their initial certification.

Top WCPSS Schools
WCPSS had four schools where three or more teachers earned renewal of their certification. Apex High had five. Cary High had four. Enloe High had three teachers renew.

WCPSS had 29 elementary, 13 middle, 27 high school teachers and three administrators renew certification this year.

WCPSS #2 in Nation for Teachers Earning Initial Certification
WCPSS had 156 teachers earn certification this year, the second largest class of new certified teachers in the nation. WCPSS had 319 teachers earn certification last year, and 197 in 2009.

The NC Department of Public Instruction reports that 1,244 NC teachers earned certification this year. NC had the largest class of teachers earning certification of any state this year. DPI reports that 19,193 NC teachers have earned certification from the National Board.

Certification is a Symbol of Excellence
NC teachers have pursued National Board certification since 1994. Teachers who achieve certification receive a salary supplement on top of their regular pay that is good for the 10-year life of the certification. They are awarded 7.5 continuing education credits (CEUs) for completing initial certification and two CEUs for renewing National Board certification.
The state supports teachers pursuing National Board certification by providing eligible candidates low-interest loans to pay the $2,500 assessment fee and three paid release days from normal teacher responsibilities to develop their portfolios.

National Board certification is the highest credential in the teaching profession and participation is voluntary. Teachers achieve certification through a rigorous performance-based assessment that typically takes from one to three years to complete and measures what accomplished teachers and counselors should know and be able to do. As a part of the process, candidates build a portfolio that includes student work samples, assignments, videotapes and a thorough analysis of their classroom teaching. Certification is currently available to educators in 27 fields.
