WCPSS Schools Seek Honors in Healthier US School Challenge

August 22, 2011 - Wake County will increase the number of North Carolina schools credited with meeting federal nutrition and exercise standards with the submission of 102 elementary school applications to the US Department of Agriculture.

Before the Wake County Public School System applied, only six schools from across the state met the Healthier US School Challenge (HUSSC) standards.

Schools that receive the awards have high student participation in school lunch programs, uphold high nutritional standards in meals served to students and promote physical education and activities for students.

WCPSS submitted applications to the NC Department of Public Instruction for an initial review of 102 elementary schools against the HUSSC standards.

The HUSSC is a voluntary initiative established in 2004 to recognize schools participating in the National School Lunch Program that have created healthier school environments through promotion of nutrition and physical activity.

In Feb. 2010, First Lady Michelle Obama introduced Let’s Move! incorporating the HUSSC into her campaign.

Elementary schools can achieve the gold standard when 70 percent of the schools' students eat school lunch and schools offer a different fruit, vegetable and whole grain serving each day of the week. Only low fat and fat-free milk may be served. Competitive foods and beverages must meet criteria for the entire school day. Students must participate in structured physical education classes for at least 90 minutes per week. Schools must provide nutrition education and support a wellness environment.

Bronze and silver standards require fewer students eating school lunch and less time in structured physical education classes.

Schools that successfully meet the challenge receive a recognition plaque and banner. The Team Nutrition website lists these schools in recognition of their leadership and excellent school meals program.
