Schools Are Ready for Hurricane Irene

August 26, 2011 - Wake County Public School System principals and staff have prepared our schools for Hurricane Irene's landfall on the North Carolina coast.

During the week, Maintenance and Operations (M&O) teams checked campuses for blocked drains, open equipment panels and other hazards. As principals leave school today, they are ensuring that loose items such as play and program equipment, signs and cones are secured, and that "hatches are battened down."

M&O staff have checked their safety and emergency response equipment, made sure their service vehicles are full of gas, and are keeping their phones charged and at hand. In the event of heavy rain and wind, Maintenance and Operations teams and principals will check campuses for damage as soon as it is safe.

We are in close contact with the National Weather Service and will monitor the storm closely. We hope all students, parents and employees have a safe weekend, and look forward to resuming classes on Monday.
