Sixty-Five Gifted WCPSS Students Selected for 2011 Governor’s School

April 4, 2011 – Sixty-five Wake County Public School System rising high school juniors and seniors are part of the 600 students selected to attend the 2011 Governor's School, the six-week summer program for academically or intellectually gifted students.

WCPSS will have 36 students attending the Governor School West at Salem College in Winston-Salem and 29 students attending the Governor School East at Meredith College in Raleigh. The 2011 session runs from June 12 - July 23.

Eighteen of the WCPSS students are attending for instrumental music, 17 for choral music, six for art and six for dance. Other students will study math, English, sciences, foreign language or theater.

School superintendents nominate students to attend. Governor's School allots each school system a certain number of nominations based on its 10th- and 11th-grade populations. The Governor's School curriculum focuses on the exploration of the most recent ideas and concepts in each discipline and does not involve credit, tests or grades.

This is the second year a tuition fee is required. In Wake County, the district will pay $250 for each Wake County student selected. Parents will pay the other $250.

Terry Sanford, is the oldest statewide summer residential program for academically or intellectually gifted high school students in the nation.
