Xtreme Beginnings Career Fair to Draw Hundreds of Students and Volunteers
April 13, 2011 - Sometimes students need a nudge to remind them that there's life after high school, and that the choices they make today can help them find a fulfilling career in adulthood.
That's why the Wake County business community supports Xtreme Beginnings, WCPSS's annual career fair for 10th- through 12th-graders, on Friday, April 15, from 9 a.m. to noon at NC State's McKimmon Center.
How Were Students Selected for Xtreme Beginnings?
Due to available space and transportation costs, career development coordinators at each school invited a limited number of participants. Xtreme Beginnings is a Career-Technical Education event.
Roughly 800 students and 300 business and post-secondary educational volunteers will fill the McKimmon Center with exciting displays and training opportunities allowing students to explore career options and learn how to present themselves as professionals:
- In the Career Expo hall, students will have informal conversations with business professionals, who will demonstrate their careers and describe the post-secondary education required.
- In the Higher Education hall, students will explore everything from certificate to four-year degree programs.
- In the Practice Interview rooms, human resources volunteers and other professionals will conduct 20-minute mock job interviews with students.
- In the What Not to Wear, What Not to Say! room, students will sit at the other side of the table, actively engaged in determining who to hire based on first impressions and answers to sample interview questions.
Motivational speaker Carolyn "CiCi" Higgins will open the program with an inspiring message for students, and WCPSS Superintendent Tony Tata will provide closing remarks.
The Raleigh-Wake Human Resources Management Association, Gregory Poole Equipment Company, Piedmont Air Conditioning, WCPSS, and School-to-Career of Wake County are sponsors of Xtreme Beginnings 2011.
