Cary High Navy JROTC Cadets Excel at Leadership Camp

September 7, 2010 - Six members of the Cary High School Navy Junior ROTC participated in the Navy Area Six Leadership Academy held at Coastal Carolina University over the summer. 

Cary High JROTC cadets Jessica Waters, Austin Hurlock and Rebecca Law assisted in providing the training and Cary High JROTC cadets Mitch Earley, John Blackwell and Josh Moore successfully completed the Leadership Academy.

The camp featured training for the cadets in advanced leadership techniques, organizational leadership, ethics, team building skills, drill and ceremonies, orienteering and physical fitness. The cadets were involved in training over 15-hour days, had three comprehensive tests, 11-quizes, one practical test, a physical fitness test and competed in a platoon drill competition.

Cadet Earley finished first in his class with a 98.8 percent average and received the Meritorious Achievement Ribbon, the highest award a cadet in Navy JROTC cadet can earn. Cadet Blackwell finished sixth in the class and received the Cadet Achievement Ribbon. The Cary High ROTC cadets were among the top 150 cadets from the 68 Navy JROTC units in North Carolina and South Carolina invited to the Area Leadership Academy.

Cary High JROTC cadets Waters, Hurlock and Law were among the seven cadet aides for this year’s Academy. The cadet aides are selected based on their high finish from the previous year. They served in roles as assistants to the platoon chiefs in the training of the student cadets. 

Cadets Waters, Hurlock and Law have been selected this year to serve as the Commanding Officer, Executive Officer and Operations Officer for the Cary unit for this school year. For their outstanding performances as cadet aides each of them received a Cadet Achievement Ribbon. 

Colonel Tom Finnerty says he’s proud of these cadets.

“We Know that they will carry on the outstanding tradition of the Cary High Navy JROTC,” said Co. Finnerty.

The Cary High Navy JROTC has been a Navy Distinguished Unit for the past ten consecutive years, the top unit in North Carolina the past five consecutive years, the top unit in Area Six the past four years and concurrently recognized as one of the “Best in Nation” units, top 11 units Nationally, by the Navy League for the past four years.
