Photos - Students Work in Literacy Centers at Brassfield Elementary

September 3 , 2010 - At Brassfield Elementary, students work hard in centers on reading and writing. Teachers work hard to make the center time effective. In Centers, students work in small groups that allow teachers to assign specific tasks that will meet the students' current instructional need.

This means that ahead of time, teachers have planned out six different activities focused on reading and writing and determined the needs of each student. Students will work on a task for about 30 minutes in their group and then they will shift to a different task for another 30 minutes. Teachers are very creative in the way they plan instruction, so students are excited to participate in center time.

At Brassfield, the kindergarten teachers have developed center cards, a card that has each child's weekly center assignments. Each card has the child's name and lists the the two center assignments for each of the five days of class.
