Seven WCPSS Seniors Named National Merit Achievement Semifinalists
September 29, 2010 - Seven Wake County Public School System students were named National Achievement Scholarship semifinalists today by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
The WCPSS students are Nicholas W. Purvis of Knightdale High, Jasre A. Ellis of Broughton High, Colton M. Wooten of Leesville Road High, Camden B. Freeman of Millbrook Magnet High, Erin Edmonds of Southeast Raleigh Magnet High and Claude-Michael E. Ezie and Alecia N. Smith of Wakefield High.
The seven WCPSS students are among 1,600 outstanding Black American high school seniors who have been named Achievement Scholarship® semifinalists. The students now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 800 National Merit Achievement Scholarships.
More than 160,000 students entered the 2011 National Achievement Scholarship Competition by requesting consideration when they took the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) as high school juniors.
To advance to the Finalist level, the students must present a record of high academic performance throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, write an essay and earn SAT scores that confirm the PSAT/NMSQT performance.
