Wake County Public School System students take part in 2010 Walk to School Day

October 4, 2010 - Students from schools across Wake County will take part in the national Walk to School celebration on Wednesday, October 6.

The City of Raleigh, Town of Cary and Town of Apex are encouraging additional Wake County elementary schools to participate in International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 6, 2010. Each municipality sent a letter of support and promotion, announcement flier and Walk to School coordinator’s kit to our local elementary schools.

The City of Raleigh Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission was integral in uniting this year’s partners. The Raleigh City Council unanimously endorsed a memorandum of understanding on August 3, 2010 for the Safe Routes to School National Partnership (SRTS-NP). SRTS-NP is a network of hundreds of organizations, government agencies, and professional groups working support agencies that implement Safe Routes to School programs.

The purpose of the Walk to School project is to enhance the health of our students and their families by providing an opportunity to increase physical activity, draw greater community awareness to safe walking and biking routes to school and demonstrate community strategies to improve air quality. Walk to School day is just one example of a lifestyle change that could help curb our nation's obesity and type II diabetes epidemic.
