Four WCPSS Students Named Morehead-Cain Scholars
April 27, 2010 - Four Wake County Public School System high school seniors have been named Morehead-Cain Scholars, providing a full four-year scholarship to UNC-Chapel Hill. The four WCPSS students are Ellen Corbitt Currin of Broughton High, George Edmonds Ramsay and Madhulika Vulimiri of Enloe High and Laura Nataly Rozo of Panther Creek High.
Currin is yearbook editor, captain of the cross country team, and president of Young Women for Women International, a service club that raises funds for and awareness of women’s issues across the world. She is a member of Broughton’s Class Council and was a leader of students who spoke out for keeping the school’s International Baccalaureate magnet program.
Ramsay is president of the student body and was a four-year All-American swimmer on Enloe’s state champion team. He works on the staff of Enloe’s award-winning video program and works as a teaching assistant as part of his service with Beta Club and National Honor Society. Outside school, he has helped lead mission trips to southern Mexico and participated in a 17-day sailing expedition with students from across the world.
Rozo is president of the French club and founder of the World Cultures Club. She moved to the U.S. from Colombia in 2005. Within three years, she not only learned to speak, read and write fluent English, but also emerged as one of the top students at Panther Creek. She has a keen interest in social entrepreneurship and was a 2008 DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) district competition finalist.
Vulimiri has earned two full four-year scholarships: both the Morehead-Cain to UNC-Chapel Hill and the Park to NC State University. She is vice-president of the school’s National Honor Society and oversees freshman projects for the Medical Bio-Science Academy. She is a devotee of Indian classical music and a member of Enloe’s chamber choir, and she has performed at Carnegie Hall with Enloe’s Honors Chorus. Outside school, she works with the North South Foundation to raise money for scholarships directed to Indian children.
The four WCPSS students are among the 64 Morehead-Cain Scholars named this year. Thirty of the scholars are from NC; the others were selected from 20 U.S. states and five other countries.
The scholarship covers all expenses for four years of undergraduate study at UNC, and features a distinctive program of summer enrichment experiences. Over four summers, scholars have the opportunity to complete an outdoor leadership course, carry out public service in the U.S. or abroad, conduct research at sites across the world and gain experience in private enterprise.
The summer enrichment program, designed to broaden each scholar’s experience and world view, is complemented during the academic year by a discovery fund that encourages deeper exploration of a particular interest.
The selection criteria for the scholarship are leadership, academic achievement, moral force of character and physical vigor. Morehead-Cain recipients are chosen solely on the basis of merit and accomplishment, not financial need.
