Three WCPSS Students Named Park Scholars
March 4, 2010 - Three WCPSS students - Madhulika Vulimiri of Enloe High, Alex Jin-Wei Chin of Broughton High and William Hampton Coe of Sanderson High – have been named Park Scholars by NC State University.Madhulika Vulimiri, daughter of Suryanarayana and Padmaja Vulimiri, is a student at Enloe High School where she is vice president of the National Honor Society, secretary of Medical Bio-Science Academy, and a member of the Chamber Choir. She has interned at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health researching COPD and has spent time in India volunteering as a teacher for a non-profit organization. Madhulika plans to major in biology or public health.
Alex Jin-Wei Chin, son of Patrick and Haren Chin, is a student at Broughton High School where he is president of the Math Club, a member of the Geography Team, and alto saxophone section leader in the marching band. He tutors high school math students and is a National Honor Society member. Alex plans to major in mathematics and physics.
William Hampton Coe, son of David and Darden Coe, is a student at Sanderson High School where he is a drum major in the marching band and a member of the National Honor Society and varsity tennis team. William also participated in North Carolina Governor's School East in 2009. He plans to major in philosophy.
These students were selected based on their potential in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. The Park Scholarship is valued at $80,000 for residents of North Carolina.
NC State received a record number of applications for Park Scholarships this year; recipients were selected from more than 1,300 candidates. The students are from 24 North Carolina counties and 12 states.
Over 100 finalists participated in selection activities during Finalist Weekend on February 19-20. Final selection activities were evaluated by more than 60 NC State faculty and alumni, one-third of whom were Park Scholar alumni. The finalists previously participated in regional interviews conducted by over 200 NC State alumni around the state and the country.
The Park Scholarships program is among the most prestigious undergraduate merit scholarship programs in the nation. Each year, approximately 50 scholarships are awarded, with two-thirds to North Carolina residents, to outstanding high school seniors for undergraduate study in any discipline.
The Park Scholarships are named for the late Roy H. Park, a 1931 NC State alumnus who created the charitable Park Foundation. The Park Foundation, based in Ithaca, New York, provides support for programs across the nation related to higher education, media, and the environment.
