March 15, 2010 -- Registration for the “Helping Your Child Transition” Family Day on Saturday, May 1 at Millbrook High School is now open. Family Day offers parents practical tips on successfully guiding their children through the extra challenges posed by big transition points in their school career, such as starting kindergarten, moving from elementary school to middle school, and moving from middle school to high school. Sessions will also focus on how transitions involve the community and the relationships among and between children, families, and educators.
The program opens with simultaneous keynotes delivered by nationally-recognized experts. Harriett Stonehill (pre-kindergarten through elementary school), and Joe Bruzzese (middle and high school) will teach parents how to effectively work with their students at home to make each school year a success.
Following the keynotes, parents will attend one of five sessions that explore a specific transition period in depth. The sessions are: Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, Another Successful Year In Elementary School, Middle School and High School. Session summaries are available below.
Community agencies and school system departments will have information booths on site to help parents get assistance with school and community resources that can support their child's school success.
“Helping Your Child Transition” Family Day runs from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on May 1, and free childcare is available. Registration is free, open to all WCPSS parents, and mandatory. Registration is available online through April 25. Registration is limited to 800 people, and is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Parent Session Summaries
Helping your child transition to:
Pre-Kindergarten
Pre-Kindergarten is often a child’s first school experience. The transition to Pre-K as well as the Pre-K experience is one that elicits both excitement and anxiety. Join two teachers, who are also parents of preschoolers, in discussion and activities that will help you create a successful transition for your child.
Kindergarten
Starting kindergarten is a milestone children and their families look forward to with great excitement and anticipation. Getting “ready” for kindergarten can mean many things; come join Project Enlightenment as they provide parents with activities and ideas that can help get their child “off to a good start” in kindergarten.
Another Successful Year In Elementary School
Harriett Stonehill is an author, educator and administrator. She presently serves as Adjunct Professor at the University of the District of Columbia, and is Director of the MegaSkills Education Center, Home and School Institute, in Washington, D.C. Harriett’s keynote and presentation on “Getting Parents Involved with the Education of Their Children” will address key concepts such as: report cards, talking with teachers, parent-teacher conferences, homework, and building family.
Middle School
Through the past 20 years Joe Bruzzese has successfully guided children, parents and educators through the challenges of the childhood years. As a nationally recognized author and speaker, Joe will bring innovation, energy, recognition and high standards to his keynote and presentation on “Thriving During the Middle School Years”. Joe brings years of educational theory and practical experience to his work with families.
High School
Come join the Wake County Counseling Services as they walk high school parents through the high school graduation requirements. Transitioning to high school can be an exciting time for families but it doesn’t come without some major changes in academic and social expectations. This session will offer parents information to make sure they understand exactly what is required during the high school years while ensuring their children make memories filled with an abundance of learning, life-long friendships, personal growth, career knowledge, and goal setting.
