14 WCPSS Magnet Schools Honored by Magnet Schools of America

June 2, 2010 - Fourteen WCPSS magnet schools were recognized as top magnet schools in the nation by the Magnet Schools of America at the association’s 28th annual conference. This year, WCPSS tied for having the most award-winning schools of any district in the nation.

Principals and staff of the schools were applauded during the June 1 meeting of the Board of Education, as WCPSS Magnet School Director David Ansbacher presented plaques to each school. Board Chair Ron Margiotta offered his congratulations.

“Magnet schools serve as an integral piece in educating children in Wake County,” said Margiotta. “Magnet schools offer choice to parents, help balance school populations, maximize school capacity and expand educational opportunities for families. None of these objectives could be met without the tireless work of the teachers, principals, school staff and parents at our magnet schools. On behalf of the Wake County Board of Education, I thank you for the work you do to create these options for parents and students, implement enhancements to the Standard Course of Study and market these options to families. These are not small tasks and we appreciate all that you do. National recognitions like these continue to reinforce the strong national reputation of the Wake County Public Schools.”

The 14 WCPSS schools were selected from a national field of more than 2,000 magnet schools. The schools choose to be considered for the competition that looks at innovative instructional strategies, student achievement, diversity goals, and parent and community involvement in the magnet school.

Schools are recognized as 2010 Magnet Schools of Excellence which are considered for the top magnet school in the nation. Schools also earn recognition as Magnet Schools of Distinction.
