More than 50 WCPSS Teachers Earn National Board Re-Certification
January 11, 2010 – More than 50 Wake County Public School System educators earned re-certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards this year.
“Teachers who seek re-certification from the National Board are seasoned veterans of the classroom who have already gone through the demanding process of self-examination and testing, and seen its benefits,” said Superintendent Del Burns. “These teachers are leaders in their schools and are making a difference every day in student learning.”
WCPSS had 52 educators earn re-certification this year. After 10 years, National Board certified teachers must submit a portfolio of their accomplishments as teacher leaders to maintain the distinction. Teachers typically begin the renewal process in the eighth year of certification. As in the initial certification, impact on student achievement remains the focus. Renewal candidates complete the National Board’s Profile of Professional Growth submitting videos demonstrating their teaching and providing evidence of how they have positively impacted student achievement since their initial certification.
Top WCPSS Schools
Three WCPSS schools had three or more teachers earn re-certification this year. Enloe High had four teachers earn re-certification, the most of any Wake County school. Broughton High and Davis Drive Elementary each had three teachers renew their National Board Certification.
WCPSS had 21 elementary, 12 middle, 18 high school and one Title I teacher renew this year.
Nearly 200 WCPSS Teachers Earn National Board Certification
Nearly 200 Wake County Public School System educators earned certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards this year, continuing WCPSS leadership in supporting teachers who pursue and achieve National Board Certification.
WCPSS is second in the nation and number one in the state in the total number of teachers who have earned certification.
For the second year in a row, WCPSS had 197 educators earn certification. With this latest round of certification, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards reports that they have certified a total of 1,702 WCPSS teachers.
The NC Department of Public Instruction reports that 1,509 teachers earned certification across the state this year. DPI reports that 15,695 North Carolina teachers have earned certification from the National Board.
