Board Finalizes Assignments; Magnet and Calendar Notification Set for April 16
April 7, 2010 – At its April 6 meeting, the Board of Education finalized student assignment for 2010-11, requiring the notification date for magnet and calendar applications to move to April 16 to incorporate the final changes to the assignment plan.WCPSS Growth and Planning staff will begin implementing the changes made by the board and will then be able to run magnet/calendar selection. After the selection process has been run, families will be able to visit the WCPSS website to view the status of their magnet and calendar applications.
The information will be available on the website on Friday, April 16, instead of the earlier proposed date of Thursday, April 8. This change in date provided the board additional time to review student assignments.
Parents will then have one week until April 23 to make a decision and will be asked to indicate their decision not to accept the application seat by noting this on the website if they decline the requested magnet or calendar assignment.
Early the week of April 19, parents of students at multi-track, year-round schools can check with their schools which will be releasing information on track assignments. Principals will be working to better align family preferences and needs with track assignments to provide more stability for families and to avoid further track changes.

The board added the assignment of nodes 339.1, 339.2, 339.2 to Leesville Middle School as base beginning 2010-11. The board removed from the plan the assignment of 383.3 and 384.4 to Apex Middle School as base beginning in 2010-11.
The calendar application assignment changes include:
- Assign Nodes 376.0, 377.1, 377.2, 377.3, 377.4 to Weatherstone Elementary School as their traditional calendar option beginning 2010-11.

- Current year-round calendar applications students from Carver Elementary, Partnership Elementary, Centennial Middle School, and Moore Square Middle School can remain at their year-round calendar school with transportation provided until the terminal grade of that school. New year-round calendar application students from these schools for 2010-11 can attend their year-round application school without school district transportation or request their base assignment. These schools will no longer have a year-round calendar option beginning 2011-12. (This means that students based at modified calendar elementary and middle schools can apply for a traditional calendar seat beginning in 2011-12. This will be their only calendar option.)
The board made two changes from its work session proposal of March 31. The board provided the option for families in nodes 375.0, 628.1 and 628.2 to apply to Cedar Fork Elementary as their traditional calendar option. The board directed the school system to try to address as many family requests from these nodes as possible at Cedar Fork Elementary. The proposal at the work session would have assigned these nodes to Weatherstone Elementary. The board changed the assignment of nodes 312.1, 312.2, 312.4, 312.5, 312.6, 337.1, 337.2, 343.2 and 343.3 to Sycamore Creek Elementary School as their year-round calendar option beginning 2010-11. The proposal at the work session would have assigned the nodes to Green Road Elementary.
