Wight was named Wake County Principal of the Year last October. He has been in education 24 years and has been principal at Apex High for two years. Prior to his job at Apex High, Wight served as principal of Salem Middle, East Cary Middle and was a principal, assistant principal and teacher in the New Hanover County schools.
In his two years at Apex High, Wight has brought attention to the importance of working together for student academic success.
Wight now becomes one of eight Regional Principals of the Year under consideration for the 2009 Wachovia Principal of the Year. Each of the regional winners receives $1,000 and their school receives $1,000. This is the 25th year Wachovia Corporation has sponsored these financial awards.
Regional selection committees read and evaluate each candidate’s portfolio, and personally interview each to name a regional winner. The committees consider many criteria. Each candidate is expected to merit the respect and admiration of students, teachers, and other professional coworkers, parents, and members of the community. Involvement in the community, as well as in school activities, also is considered. Candidates are expected to provide opportunities for academic achievement to a diverse student population.
The state Wachovia Principal of the Year will be announced in April 2009 at the state luncheon in Raleigh. A statewide selection committee reviews the portfolios of the eight regional winners. Each is interviewed, and the selection committee visits each candidate’s school campus. The 2009 Wachovia Principal of the Year will receive $3,000 for his or her school and $3,000 for his or her personal use.
This is the third year in a row that the Wake County Principal of the Year went on to be named the state’s North Central Region Principal of the Year. Last year, Cathy Moore, earned the honors. Moore was principal of Sanderson High. She now serves as a WCPSS Area Superintendent. In 2007, Jamee Lynch who was principal of Hodge Road Elementary, earned the honor. Lynch is now principal of Sanford Creek Elementary.
