11 WCPSS Students Named Achievement Scholarship Semifinalists
September 25, 2008 - Eleven students from seven Wake County Public School System high schools have been recognized as semifinalists in the 45th annual Achievement Scholarship competition. The 11 students were among more than 1,600 Black American high school seniors recognized nationally.Three of the students are from Enloe High including Jacob H. Besigel, Amelia J. Lumpkin and Mariah Moore.
Two of the students are from Apex High including Bianqa D. Bizune and Lariah D. Ijames.
Two of the students are from Panther Creek High including Jasmine V. Clark and John Fisher.
Other students named semifinalists include Kelly Wyche of Broughton High, Tiffany Ezuma of Leesville Road High, Kaiya M. Arroyo of Middle Creek High and Derrick E. Smith of Wake Forest-Rolesville High..
These scholastically talented students have an opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 800 Achievement Scholarship awards worth some $2.6 million. Approximately 1,300 semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing in the 2009 National Achievement Program and some 800 will become Achievement Scholar awardees.
To advance to the finalist level in the competition, semifinalists must present a record of high academic performance throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the school principal and earn SAT scores that confirm the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test performance. The semifinalist and a school official must complete a scholarship application in which they provide information about the student's participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities and educational goals.
More than 150,000 high school juniors from all parts of the U.S. requested consideration in the 2009 National Achievement program when they took the 2007 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
