Schedule Set for Multi-year Assignment Proposal

November 10, 2008 - A draft multi-year student assignment proposal that promises families greater predictability and better defined feeder patterns will be available for view online at wcpss.net at 9 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 15.

This is the first time the Wake County Public School System has offered a draft multi-year assignment proposal. It will be based on the opening of schools that are part of the current school construction program. Ten new schools are due to open during the 2009-10 and 2010-11 school years. The second and third years of assignments are directly linked to schools opening in the second and third year as currently proposed and contingent upon capital funding and enrollment growth.

The school system has improved the student assignment process by providing a student assignment proposal prior to community engagement meetings. WCPSS Growth and Planning staff met with educators and parents from schools that would be impacted by the opening of new schools for feedback in developing the initial proposal. Discussions in five community engagement meetings across Wake County will provide additional input for improvements to the proposal.

The Community Engagement Meetings will be held:

Meetings will be 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the auditorium of each high school.

The multi-year assignment proposal will provide families advance notice, greater predictability and better defined feeder patterns. There will be less year-to-year uncertainty for families and proposals will seek to provide more opportunities for students to move together from elementary to middle and from middle to high school.

This assignment proposal will impact students at the elementary, middle and high school levels. The last assignment plan only included elementary students.

The Growth and Planning staff will work to provide a multi-year assignment proposal to the school board in December. The board will hold public hearings and review the proposal with a goal of approving a plan in early 2009.

The multi-year assignment proposal will assign students into new schools being built as part of the multi-year school construction program approved in November 2006. The current national economic situation has caused uncertainly for the construction schedule. The second and third years of assignments are directly linked to schools opening in the second and third year as currently proposed and contingent upon capital funding and enrollment growth. WCPSS staff is working closely with Wake County staff to monitor this fiscal situation.
