New School Construction Nearly Complete
June 16, 2008 - WCPSS is finishing construction on three new elementary schools that will be ready to welcome students for the upcoming 2008-09 school year and will allow room for future growth expected in 2009-10 and 2010-11. The three schools are Laurel Park Elementary, Mills Park Elementary, and Sycamore Creek Elementary.

Laurel Park Elementary
Next month, Laurel Park Elementary, a new year-round school in Apex, will open its doors to 642 students. Laurel Park is a 111,356 square foot renovated industrial building. Currently, all air conditioning and heating units have been installed and are in operation. Sidewalks and landscaping are in the final stages. The car pool and bus loading areas are being paved. All data and phone connections are being finalized and inspected. Furniture will be delivered to the school this month.
Mills Park Elementary
Mills Park Elementary, a new year-round school in Cary, will open its doors to 709 students next month. Mills Park is a 103,769 square foot three-story building. Work currently being done at the school includes the installation of landscaping, roadwork stripping, and final finishing and cleanup. Flooring and carpeting have been installed. Final inspections are in progress.
Sycamore Creek Elementary
Sycamore Creek Elementary, a new year-round school in Northwest Raleigh, will open its doors to 695 students in August. Sycamore Creek students will begin the school year at Hilburn Elementary in July, before moving to their permanent building. Sycamore Creek is a 103,348 square foot two-story elementary school. Exterior masonry and roofing work are nearing completion. Fine grading of the courtyard is in progress as well as the installation of landscaping. Plumbing, fire protection, mechanical and electrical rough in work have been completed in the 200 and 300 Wings and are still progressing in the 100 Wing. Interior drywall installation, painting, and lay-in ceilings are in progress as well as the installation of windows, doors, flooring and mechanical equipment.
Other New School Facilities
In addition to the three new schools that are opening with its own students, Banks Road Elementary will open this year as a swing school for Smith Elementary students, while Smith Elementary undergoes renovations. In 2009, Banks Road Elementary will officially open with its own students. Students from Aversboro Elementary will also move into their newly renovated building this year. WCPSS began constructing a new school behind the existing school for Aversboro students to occupy in 2008-09.
