WCPSS Sponsors Event for Parents at McKimmon Center

July 31, 2008 - An educator who wrote the book on family involvement in schools will be one of the speakers at an August 13 event the Wake County Public School System will provide for the community.

The "Making Powerful Connections to Eliminate the Achievement Gap" program is an all-day event featuring a nationally recognized author and local education leaders.

Dr. Karen L. Mapp, one of the authors of Beyond the Bake Sale: The Essential Guide to Family-School Partnerships and a lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, will discuss the importance of parents being actively involved with their students' education at home and school.

One reviewer said Mapp's book "presents advice, tips, and plans for teachers, parents, and administrators to begin working towards collaboration and cooperation in the school setting."

The conference begins at 8:30 a.m. with a joint morning session and continues with afternoon break-out sessions until 4 p.m. In the break out sessions, Wake County educators will discuss elementary school mathematics, taking part in effective parent-teacher conferences, and navigating the school system.

"Making Powerful Connections To Eliminate the Achievement Gap" is sponsored by the Wake County Raising Achievement and Closing the Gaps Family Involvement Sub-Committee as well as the Title I Program and Prevention Services Department of the Wake County Public School System.

There is limited space available. Registration is on a "first come, first serve" basis but a waiting list will be established. If you have questions, call Ann Rollins at 854-2644.
