Moore Named Regional Principal of the Year
January 24, 2008 - Cathy Moore, principal of Sanderson High School, has been selected as the Regional Principal of the Year by the NC Department of Public Instruction, The Principals’ Executive Program and the Wachovia Corporation.
Moore was named Wake County Principal of the Year last October. She has been in education for 20 years and has been principal of Sanderson High School for seven years. Prior to that Moore was assistant principal at Enloe High and Apex High. She was a foreign language teacher at Enloe High and taught at a high school in another NC school district.
Moore now becomes one of eight Regional Principals of the Year under consideration for the 2008 Wachovia Principal of the Year. Each of the eight principals receives $1,500 for their school and $1,500 for personal use. This is the 24th year Wachovia Corporation has sponsored these financial awards.
Regional selection committees read and evaluate each candidate’s portfolio, and personally interview each to name a regional winner. The committees consider many criteria. Each candidate is expected to merit the respect and admiration of students, teachers, and other professional coworkers, parents, and members of the community. Involvement in the community, as well as in school activities, also is considered. Candidates are expected to provide opportunities for academic achievement to a diverse student population.
The state Wachovia Principal of the Year will be announced in April 2008 at the state luncheon in Raleigh. A statewide selection committee reviews the portfolios of the eight regional winners. Each is interviewed, and the selection committee visits each candidate’s school campus. The 2008 Wachovia Principal of the Year will receive $3,000 for his or her school and $3,000 for his or her personal use.
Moore becomes the second WCPSS educator to earn regional recognition. Earlier this month, Wake County Teacher of the Year Paige Elliott was named the Regional Teacher of the Year and is competing for state Teacher of the Year honors.
