WCPSS Graduates More Than 7,600 Students for 2008

June 2 , 2008 - The Wake County Public School System will award diplomas to 7,684 students in 19 ceremonies through Sunday, June 14.

Valedictorian Speeches: Ssome of our valedictorians have shared the comments they made at graduation.

Most of the students will continue their education in college, while others will enlist in the military or join the workforce.

The class of 2008 earned more than $46.78 million in scholarships, had more than 964 qualifying for the North Carolina Scholars program and more than 1,200 Honor Society graduates.

Six high schools have senior classes with 500 or more students. Apex High has 559. Enloe has 556. Green Hope has 555. Southeast Raleigh has 510. Wakefield has 510. Cary has 500. The 7,684 graduates this year compares with 7,267 last year.

Southeast Raleigh High held the first graduation ceremony on May 31. Michael Wright gave the valedictorian address. The Southeast Raleigh High class of 2008 includes Morehead-Cain Scholar Shenise Nicole Gilyard, two National Merit Achievement Scholars and two NC Teaching Fellows.

Apex High had one National Merit College Scholar and three NC Teaching Fellows.

Athens Drive High had Park Scholars Stephanie Leyrer and William Hunt. There was one appointment to the US Naval Academy, four National Merit Corporate Scholars, and three NC Teaching Fellows.

Broughton High had Park Scholar William Andrew Rothenberg, one appointment to West Point, one appointment to the US Coast Guard Academy, one Coca-Cola Scholar, one Hernandez-Gordan Scholar, four National Merit Scholars, one National Merit Achievement Scholar and 45 students who completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

Cary High had Morehead-Cain Scholar William Harris Thomason, one appointment to the US Naval Academy, one National Merit Corporate Scholar, one National Merit College Scholar, one National Merit Achievement Scholar and eight NC Teaching Fellows.

Enloe High had Morehead-Cain Scholar Alice Yen, Presidential Scholar Richard Lan, five National Merit $2,500 Scholars, four National Merit College Scholars, one National Merit Achievement Scholar, two NC Teaching Fellows and 32 students who completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

Garner High had one Howard Scholar for Duke University, one Poteat Scholar for Wake Forest University, one appointment to the US Naval Academy, one National Merit Achievement Scholar and 20 students who completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

Sanderson High had two Air Force ROTC Scholars, two Army ROTC Scholars, one appointment to the US Air Force Academy, one National Merit Scholar and one NC Teaching Fellow.

Wakefield High had Park Scholar Garik Cruise Sadovy, two Gates Millenium Scholars, one National Merit $2,500 Scholar, one National Merit Achievement Scholar and three NC Teaching Fellows.

This year, WCPSS high schools will hold graduation ceremonies at the Reynolds Coliseum at NC State, the Progress Energy Center and in Holiday Gym at Broughton High. With most schools having 300 to 500 graduates, there will be additional traffic and parking demands in the area during the ceremonies.

The WCPSS Security Department, Raleigh Police Department and Wake County Sheriff's Department will attend graduation ceremonies. Only persons with an admission ticket will be admitted to a graduation ceremony. In addition, no laptop computers, packages, artificial noisemakers, balloons, or other disruptive devices will be permitted.
