Two WCPSS Schools Named Real DEAL Award Winners

December 11, 2008 - Panther Creek High and Carpenter Elementary have been named Real DEAL award winners for 2008.

The two WCPSS schools were selected for the honor on the basis of excellent teaching and learning conditions and outstanding student achievement. Panther Creek High is only the second comprehensive high school in the state to earn this recognition.

The winners were recognized Dec. 4 at the NC Teacher Working Conditions Conference in Cary. At the conference, Panther Creek High principal Rodney Nelson and Carpenter Elementary principal Vickie Brown and their faculties made presentations about best practices and successful strategies used in their schools.

The schools honored as Real DEAL (Dedicated Educators, Administrators and Learners) winners are honored for taking a leading role in using the feedback from the state’s Teacher Working Conditions Survey to create a better environment for teachers and students, setting an example for other schools to follow. Data from the survey shows strong and significant connections between positive teacher working conditions and student achievement.

In 2002, North Carolina administered the first Teacher Working Conditions Survey and became the first state in the nation to ask its teachers what they need to succeed. Today, more than 20 states have implemented similar initiatives and the national magazine Education Week has named the survey as an indicator of quality on state education report cards.
