Board Finalizes Plans for 14 Schools in Title I School Improvement
The Wake County Board of Education has approved public school choice options for 14 Wake County schools that receive Title I funding and are in School Improvement, as required by No Child Left Behind.
The board finalized these plans at its meeting Tuesday and letters are being sent to parents at the affected schools, providing them information on the options they have.
Under the No Child Left Behind law, if a Title I school does not make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for two years in a row in the same subject, the school enters School Improvement status. At that point the school must offer all students the option to transfer to another school.
School options were identified for families at Barwell Road, Briarcliff, Bugg, Conn, Creech Road, Fox Road, Lynn Road, Poe and Zebulon elementary schools. Letters explaining School Improvement and the public school choice option are being sent to families at these schools. The schools entered School Improvement based on the testing results released last month.
Letters were sent last month to families at Brentwood, Harris Creek, Wendell, Wilburn and York elementary schools notifying them of school choice options. These schools were in School Improvement and are working to achieve two years of annual yearly progress to exit School Improvement.
Brentwood, Harris Creek and Wilburn elementary schools are currently in School Improvement status, but made AYP in math for 2007-08. Brentwood and Wilburn must make AYP in the reading results to be reported later this year to progress toward a second successful year to move out of School Improvement status.
The Title I School Improvement schools and the school options are listed in the table below. The option schools were selected for potential transfers from Title I School Improvement schools based on the potential impact on the profile of the schools of choice, transportation patterns, availability of services and available space.
Wendell and York elementary schools will move into the year of School Improvement status that requires that families have the opportunity to move into schools designated by the school board and receive opportunities for after school tutoring.
Powell Elementary has made AYP in math for the second year in a row and now exits School Improvement status. By meeting AYP for two consecutive years in the subject area(s) that caused it to go into School Improvement, a school exits from School Improvement.
No additional WCPSS schools face the possibility of entering School Improvement status based on AYP reading results due to be released this fall.
