Board Approves Plan to Contact Parents

April 22, 2008 - A plan to obtain consent from families of students assigned to year-round and modified-calendar schools for 2008-09 was approved by the Board of Education today.

Timeline

Traditional Calendar Options

The board approved the plan and alternative traditional calendar school assignments for parents who choose to send their children to a traditional calendar school rather than their assigned school. This is the second year the school system has sought parent consent to year-round and modified calendar assignments following a ruling from Wake County Superior Court Judge Howard Manning. The school system has appealed that ruling, and is awaiting a decision from a state appeals court.

Under the plan approved by the board, WCPSS Growth and Planning will mail more than 6,400 letters to families seeking their decision regarding whether they plan to send their children to their assigned year-round or modified calendar school, or request assignment to the alternative traditional calendar school approved by the board.

The letters will be sent to families who pre-registered students assigned as base students to year-round or modified calendar schools; families who have students assigned to a designated traditional calendar school for 2007-08 whose parents did not apply for a calendar option and who are now assigned to a year-round or modified calendar school for 2008-09; or families who have students in nodes reassigned to year-round schools form traditional calendar schools or are moving from a traditional calendar elementary school to a year-round middle school.

Administrators at schools will be asked to contact the families of 3,000 students to make them aware of their options. The schools would be contacting the families who have students assigned to a designated traditional calendar school for 2007-08 whose parents did not apply for a calendar option and who are now assigned to a year-round or modified calendar school for 2008-09; or families who have students in nodes reassigned to year-round schools form traditional calendar schools or are moving from a traditional calendar elementary school to a year-round middle school.

WCPSS Growth and Planning will deliver 27,000 information sheets to be sent home with student assignment strips in May. These information sheets will be sent to families who have students with a current base assignment to a year-round or modified-calendar school and gave consent during the 2007-08 school year for assignment to those schools. The information sheets will provide families with information about their options and encourage them to contact their schools or the WCPSS Growth and Planning Office if they want their students to attend the alterantive traditional calendar school assignment.

Families who receive the letters or the information sheets will be asked to make a decision by May 23 and notify WCPSS Growth and Planning.

Assistant Superintendent Chuck Dulaney said this process will address parents’ needs and be simpler for everyone, reducing paperwork and helping schools by providing them more information earlier.
