WCPSS Graduates More Than 7,200 Students for 2007

June 3, 2007 - The Wake County Public School System will award diplomas to 7,267 students in 19 ceremonies through Sunday, June 10.

Most of the students will continue their education in college, while others will enlist in the military or join the workforce.

The class of 2007 earned more than $39.96 million in scholarships, had more than 980 qualifying for the North Carolina Scholars program and more than 1,200 Honor Society graduates.

Three high schools have senior classes with around 500 students. Cary High has 529. Green Hope has 523. Apex has 519. The 7,267 graduates this year compares with 6,774 last year.

Southeast Raleigh High held the first graduation ceremony on June 1. Twin brothers Wayneho Kam and Waynekid Kam gave the valedictorian address. The Southeast Raleigh High class of 2007 had 28 Presidential Scholars, two National Merit finalists, and one National Merit Achievement Finalist.

Apex High had a Park Scholar, Jonathan Wormald, one National Merit finalist and two NC Teaching fellows.

Athens Drive High had Park Scholars Julia Wofford and Brandee Woolard. Patrick Laughlin earned appointment to the US Naval Academy. The school had 51 Presidential Scholars.

Broughton High had three Morehead Scholars William McElwee Clayton, Elizabeth Landon McCain, and Gregory Forest Randolph; two National Merit Scholars, two McKissick Scholars, one Axline Scholar, one Pogue Scholar and three Presidential Scholars. The school had 34 seniors complete the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Three students earned full athletic grants-in-aid and eleven earned partial athletic grants-in-aid.

At Cary High, students earned seven  NC Teaching fellows, six Presidential awards, one Chancellor's scholarship, and three Dean's awards. Adrian Ayure received four service academy appointments (Air Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines, and Navy), and will head to Colorado Springs this summer.  

East Wake High held graduation ceremonies for the East Wake School of Health Science and East Wake High together this year, as the school works towards dividing into four separate schools on the same campus with focused areas of instruction. This year, East Wake had three NC Teaching fellows and a SECU Scholar.

Enloe High had 93 Presidential Scholars, 15 National Merit finalists and one National Achievement finalist. Peter Kerkhoff earned an appointment to the US Military Academy. Nick DeBarmore earned appointment to the Air Force Academy.

Fuquay-Varina High had three students – Mathew Guy, Christopher Hollinger and Jessica Sanchez – earn appointments to military academies.

Garner High had its first group of 21 seniors to complete the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. There were three Presidential Scholars. Garner had one National Achievement Scholar and two NC Teaching fellows. Trey Grissom earned appointment to the US Naval Academy.

Middle Creek High had 12 Presidential Scholars. The school had two NC Teaching fellows. Nathan McQueen earned a ROTC scholarship.

Millbrook High had one National Achievement Scholar, one NC Teaching fellow and one Toyota Community Scholar.

Sanderson High had two NC Teaching fellows, Jessica Dobyns and Scott McFarlane. Clark Pixton was a National Merit Scholar. Ellen Meder was named a McNair Scholar, earning a full scholarship to the University of SC. David Truxal earned appointment to the US Air Force Academy. William Craven earned appointment to the US Naval Academy. Kristen Moore and Katelyn Dodson earned Air Force ROTC scholarships. Landon Clement earned a full basketball scholarship to UNC-Greensboro.

Wake Forest-Rolesville High had 17 Presidential Awards, 113 Honor Graduates, and 63 North Carolina Scholars.  Joshua Hankins was National Achievement Scholar finalist and John Hammond was a National Merit Scholar finalist.

Wakefield High had one Morehead Scholar, Daniela de Lima Nogueira; and one student who earned a $150,000 ROTC scholarship. The school had 81 Presidential Scholars.

This is the first graduation ceremony for Knightdale High School, which opened two years ago with ninth and tenth grades.

This year, WCPSS high schools will hold graduation ceremonies at the Reynolds Coliseum at NC State and the Progress Energy Center. With most schools having 300 to 500 graduates, there will be additional traffic and parking demands in the area during the ceremonies.

The WCPSS Security Department, Raleigh Police Department and Wake County Sheriff's Department will attend graduation ceremonies. Only persons with an admission ticket will be admitted to a graduation ceremony. In addition, no laptop computers, packages, artificial noisemakers, balloons, or other disruptive devices will be permitted.
