The Wake County Board of Education is seeking comments from citizens on the transitioning of some elementary schools to the multi-track year-round schedule to provide space for students for 2007-08.

The school system must use its current resources to provide the classroom space required. Only three new schools are currently under construction to open in July 2007 and more than 5,000 new elementary students are anticipated.

With the school system's 16 year history with multi track year round calendar schools, it has found that schools on the multi-track year-round calendar can serve 20-33 percent more students than those on a traditional calendar.

The Board of Education has determined some schools will make this transition and directed school system staff to make recommendations that will help the school system gain 3,000 elementary seats. Staff recommendations were based upon criteria adopted by the board last month after extensive discussion and public comment.
