Assignment Hearings Set For March 17

March 2, 2004 - The Wake County Board of Education will hold public hearings March 17 on the growth management proposed plan to fill seven new schools in 2004-2005.

The public hearings will be held at East Wake High School and Green Hope High School. The hearings begin at 5 p.m.

East Wake High is located at 5101 Rolesville Road in Wendell. Green Hope High is located at 2500 Carpenter Upchurch Road in Cary.

The public is asked to sign up to participate in the hearings. Sign up for the public hearings and the comment period on the proposed plan begins 8 a.m., Wednesday, March 3. You can sign up on-line at http://www.wcpss.net/signup/assignment, or by calling the WCPSS Customer Service Center.

When you sign up, you will select to speak at one of the two hearings. You will be asked to supply your name, address and contact information and will learn the number of people who have signed up ahead of you at that location, an overview of public hearing rules and directions to the hearing site. Speakers will be called in the order that they signed up. Public hearing comments are limited to three minutes.

Persons who call the WCPSS Customer Service Center at 850-1600 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. will talk with a customer service representative who will help them get signed up. Persons who call during non-business hours should call the Customer Service Center at 850-1630. They will be asked to leave a phone number where they can be called back the next day to register. The pre registration period ends 5 p.m., March 12.

People can sign up at the public hearing site from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. March 17 to speak after those who have registered in advance.

These opportunities to comment are available until 5 p.m., Friday, March 12. All comments will be provided to the Wake County Board of Education. Board members will review community input.

The board is tentatively scheduled to finalize the proposal with a vote during its meeting on March 30.
