WCPSS Graduates More Than 6,200 Students

May 25, 2004 - The Wake County Public School System will award diplomas to 6,200 students in 16 ceremonies that begin Friday and continue through Sunday.

Most of the students will continue their education in college, while others will enlist in the military or join the workforce.

The class of 2004 earned more than $31.1 million in scholarships, had more than 2,400 qualifying for the North Carolina Scholars program and more than 860 National Honor Society graduates.

At Broughton High, there are six National Merit finalists. The Evans quadruplets will be graduating. One of the quadruplets, Katherine Evans, is a Morehead Scholar. She earned a full four-year scholarship to UNC-Chapel Hill. Andrew Folz accepted an Air Force ROTC Scholarship and Ryan Gibbons won a Navy ROTC Scholarship. This is the first senior class to graduate since Broughton became a magnet school, offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

At Wakefield High, there is one National Merit finalist, 70 Presidential Scholars, and three military academy appointees. Andrew Joseph McKinley has an appointment to West Point, Stephen Matthew Leff has a Navy ROTC Scholarship and Peter Melnik has an Air Force ROTC scholarship. This is the first graduating class that has been at the Wakefield High campus all four years.

At Garner Senior High, there are 28 Presidential Scholars, one Park Scholar, one Duke University Scholar, one student who earned an Air Force ROTC Scholarship, one student who earned a NC Nurse Scholarship, one Robert C. Byrd Scholar and three NC Teaching Fellows.

At Green Hope High, there are five National Merit finalists; 221 honor graduates; five NC Teaching Fellows and three military academy appointments. Tyler Inman has an appointment to West Point, Jeffrey Clement to the Naval Academy, and William Parrish to the Air Force Academy.

At Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School, there are two National Merit finalists - Peter Thompson and Frank Vaughan, 153 Honor Graduates and 37 Presidential Scholars. Warren Maurice Perry II is a Park Scholar. Levelton Thomas and Vincent Hunter are National Merit Achievement finalists. Courtney Munoz received appointments to the Naval Academy and Air Force Academy. Amy Lenfesty accepted a full academic scholarship to ECU's Early Medical Program. There are two NC Teaching Fellows and 14 students who earned full athletic scholarships.

At Sanderson High, there are 111 graduates with High Honors, Roby Chatterji earned a Morehead Scholarship and Robert C. Byrd Scholarship; Dominique Montagne is a NC Teaching Fellow and three students - Joey Corlis, Robert Brown, Josh Higgins - earned full Air Force ROTC scholarships.

This year, WCPSS high schools will hold graduation ceremonies at the Wake County Civic Center and BTI Center. With most schools having 300 to 450 graduates, there will be additional traffic and parking demands in the area during the ceremonies.

The WCPSS Security Department and Raleigh Police Department will attend graduation ceremonies. Only persons with an admission ticket will be admitted to a graduation ceremony. In addition, no laptop computers, packages, artificial noisemakers, balloons, or other disruptive devices will be permitted. All bags will be subject to search.
