Next phase of Growth Management Community Meetings Oct. 13-16

October 10, 2003 - Four meetings will be held next week to solicit citizens' views on assigning students to schools. The meetings are the second phase of the Wake County Public School System's Community Engagement Meetings to help inform and involve the public in the student assignment process.

The meetings will be held:

Each of the meetings will begin at 7 p.m. and will last two hours.

In this second phase of meetings, participants will hear a 30-minute description of growth management issues related to the planning area of the county and the remaining time will be devoted to opportunities for feedback.

In the first phase of the Community Engagement Meetings held in September, participants heard a description of WCPSS policies, practices, and processes related to growth management.

In a third phase of meetings to be held in November, participants will take part in a discussion of how different schools in the area might be affected by the growth management plan for the upcoming year and for the future

After the community engagement meetings, the WCPSS Office of Growth Management will take the information they have received, and publish a growth management proposal in January 2004. Public comment on the proposal will be reviewed.

A growth management plan will be presented to the Board of Education in February 2004. The board will hold public hearings on the proposal and then vote to adopt the proposal.

Seven new schools are scheduled to open in 2004-2005. The new schools include traditional calendar schools Forestville Road Elementary, Highcroft Elementary, Salem Middle and Knightdale High and year-round schools Jones Dairy Elementary, Turner Creek Elementary and Heritage Middle.
