NCLB Mandated Parental Choice
A Title I elementary school that does not make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for two years in a row enters School Improvement status. The following year, the school must offer transfer options to all students in that school, and continue offering choices until it makes AYP two years in a row.
The Wake County Public School System will notify parents at the beginning of June if their child is eligible to transfer to another school, and provide schools to choose from. The receiving schools will meet the following criteria: 1) must not be identified for School Improvement; 2) must not be identified as persistently dangerous; 3) must have higher academic performance than the sending school, 4) may not be new schools and 5) will be a traditional calendar school.
WCPSS may provide transportation for students choosing to transfer - spending up to 20 percent of the Title I budget (if needed) - and give priority to the lowest achieving, low income students.
Parents may identify their preferences among the schools offered. The district will look at the responses, determine final choice options and contact parents. In turn, parents must communicate whether they accept the final choice or wish to remain at the original school.
Remember, all Wake County schools are good schools, so any choice is a good one. Evaluate what is best for your family.
