NCLB Overview: One Measure of Academic Success
The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 was the biggest change in federal education law in many years, mandating a series of changes in public school systems across the country. Here in Wake County, although we've been working diligently behind the scenes to prepare our students and schools for No Child Left Behind, parents and citizens will soon be seeing some of its first visible effects. It will mean changes in some of our schools, and new choices for those families affected.
This information is our effort to explain these changes and help you understand what those choices are. Please read it carefully and talk to your teachers and principal. It's important that you understand No Child Left Behind's impact so you can make the wisest decisions about your child's education.
No Child Left Behind is only one measurement of a school's success. Wake County has 110 North Carolina Schools of Excellence and Schools of Distinction, for example. And your involvement with your child's school will give you the most direct experience to help you assess whether it meets your child's needs, regardless of any external measure.
We are working hard to meet the goals of No Child Left Behind, the North Carolina ABCs, and most especially Wake County citizens' high standards. Those high standards have led us to our historic success, and they will continue to do so.
