Grants
The WCPSS Magnet Programs Department has won its seventh Magnet Schools Assistance Program (MSAP) grant from the Department of Education. The 2007-10 MSAP grant will provide funding for E. Garner Magnet Middle School, Garner Magnet High School, and Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School. The three year total awarded to these schools is $8,320,469, the fourth largest grant award out of 41 funded districts. The grant goals are the following:
- Attract/maintain district’s diverse school population
- Increase the achievement of students at project schools
- Provide access to quality programs
- Maximize use of school facilities
The MSAP project will significantly revise these three existing magnet schools over the next three years. Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School will implement project-based learning supported by the adaptation of the New Tech High School model, as well as strengthen students’ leadership and life skills. Garner Magnet High School will add a cultural arts program to complement the existing IB program. It will also develop students’ awareness and appreciation of different cultures. E. Garner Magnet Middle School will enhance its IB program with an electronic student portfolio and IB pre-personal project. It will also use an interdisciplinary approach to teaching through the arts and expand cultural awareness among students.
