Magnet Programs Review: BOE Work Session and Committee Meetings
Objectives
Magnet Programs will be used to foster healthy schools throughout the Wake County Public School System by using choice to help:
- Reduce high concentrations of poverty and support diverse populations;
- Maximize use of school facilities and
- Provide expanded educational opportunities

- Reviewed information related to magnet programs including a history of magnet schools and a definition of equity magnets.
- Discussed plans for gathering and reporting information to the Board of Education.
- Collected questions from Board members for responses at the subsequent work session.
February 26 and 27, 2007
- Reviewed data on all magnet schools including individual school profiles.
- Presented information to the Board based on the requests and questions from the November 16 work session.
March 12, 2007
- Reviewed data on all schools.
- Reviewed and revised the objectives of magnet programs.
- Discussed the purpose of equity magnet schools and if the schools aligned with the objectives.
- Reviewed the guidelines (flowcharts) for magnetizing and demagnetizing a school.
April 11, 2007
- Met with the Board of Education Program Committee to discuss the design of the matrix that would be used to determine magnet schools’ alignment with magnet programs objectives.

- Met with the Board of Education Program Committee to finalize the design of the matrix that would be used to determine magnet schools’ alignment with magnet programs objectives.`
May 17, 2007
- Reviewed magnet programs objectives and the purpose of the magnet schools evaluation.
- Presented results of E&R’s review of magnet programs.
- Reviewed the matrix and agreed that it could be used as a tool to determine how well a magnet school meets magnet programs objectives.
- Presented the matrix with individual school data inserted.
- Discussed each school and the data presented on the matrix.
- Determined which schools needed further study based on the composite scores on the matrix.
May 23, 2007
- Reviewed magnet programs objectives and the purpose of the magnet schools evaluation.
- Reviewed requested information and data on the identified elementary magnet schools
- Reached agreement on which elementary schools are no longer aligned with objectives of magnet programs.
- Received information on possible action steps to help the other schools become better aligned with the objectives.
June 5, 2007
- Reviewed magnet programs objectives and the purpose of the magnet schools evaluation.
- Discussed the middle and high schools that were identified as not aligning strongly with the objectives of magnet programs.
- Requested additional information on several middle and high schools.
- Postponed a formal vote on the status of elementary schools, directing school system staff to expand its dialogue with the affected school communities.

- Held public dialogue session at Olds Elementary.
June 18, 2007
- Held public dialogue session at Lincoln Heights Elementary.
June 19, 2007
- Reviewed the proposed magnet program phase-out plans for the five identified elementary schools.

- Held public dialogue session at Wake Forest Elementary.
