The Wake County Experience
- Leaders will have the opportunity to work with departments directly related to their current field of study at the college/university level, and

Examples of Projects to Complete with the Wake County Public School System:
Child Nutrition Services
- Create dashboards and key performance indicator (KPI) reports that compile data provided by the Websmart software program for Point-of-Sale transactions into useful information.
- Create videos to educate students on making wise and informed choices about breakfast and lunch consumption. Develop videos to promote breakfast consumption and illustrate what WCPSS Child Nutrition Services provides.
- Manage and update the WCPSS Child Nutrition Services website to include ease in navigating information, photos of CNS programs, places for information that changes weekly or monthly. Create a webpage that is user friendly and informative.
- Complete an efficiency study to determine warehouse strengths and weaknesses and create strategies for improvements within warehouse operations.
Office of Grants
- Develop a matrix from identified grant opportunities and create and maintain a schedule of WCPSS grant opportunities.
- Prepare and submit grant proposals for specified Wake County Public Schools
Student Support Services
- Analyze alignment of spending plans to actual expenditures; examine patterns of spending (central services expenditures vs. expenditures on school-based activities) for Student Support Services.
- Work on expansion of existing mediation relationship and/or create a relationship with North Carolina Central University to provide mediation services and explore collaboration with the existing Wake County Teen Court program.
- Review all of the Board of Education policies in the Student Support Services area to determine which policies need revision based on date completed and/or alignment with current practice.
Academics
- Develop presentations for Common Core and Essential Standards in K-12 content areas for parents/families.
- Collaborate with Academics Specialist to develop content for the Academics Internet and Intranet websites.
Maintenance & Operations
- Analyze and review the current routing process for Maintenance and Operations and Facilities Design and Construction.
- Review current processes for determination of in-house vs. contract work.
- Manage utility usage data for all WCPSS schools and test Excel applications using data analytics.
Perform life safety and security systems assessment of all buildings and compare to industry standards across the country. - Analyze the cost/benefit of Green technology in HVAC and Electrical Building Systems.
Human Resources
- Assist the Human Resources Department in the creation, classification, organization and analysis of Wake County Public School System job descriptions and organization charts.
- Assist with Recruitment Plan implementation, district-wide recruitment events, website updates, and design marketing and advertisement materials.
- Provide oversight and technical support of North Carolina Educator Evaluation System (NCEES) online tool for district evaluations of teachers and administrators and design district training documentation and manuals.
Real Estate Services
- Review maps and surveys of WCPSS real property, land use restrictions, and prepare site summary for each WCPSS site and provide summary of study findings.
- Develop database of information gathered in evaluation of Joint Use site facilities. Review existing applicable Joint Use Agreement for identification of party responsible for addressing identified issues per existing Joint Use Agreements.
Facilities Design and Construction
- Project managing small facilities modification projects, as well as involvement in design reviews and installation of temporary classroom buildings.
- Review, update and re-design the Facilities Procedure Manual for Design & Construction and Maintenance & Operations.
Transportation
- Assemble accounting transaction support and process payables, provide assistance with reconciliation of business activities, and assist with auditing steps.
Special Education
- Create a series of professional development modules for teachers regarding integrating IPADs as an instructional technology into classroom instruction. Develop a data system that allows the Special Education department to analyze the impact of IPAD use on classroom instruction.
- Develop an electronic process allowing schools to have easier access to caseloads. In addition to the electronic versions of the schedules and caseloads, develop specific rules that correspond directly to the requirements from Policies Governing Services for Children with Disabilities. Collaborate with staff to revise the NCEC Outcomes Initiative Age Referencing Document and outline a training plan/ presentation for implementing the use of the new document for Preschool Special Education Services staff and others as needed.
- Generate an all-inclusive list of class assignments for special education teachers and teacher assistants. Research and determine current class assignments for all special education teachers and teacher assistants. Work with staff to ensure that class assignments accurately reflect current responsibilities and positions allocated.
Area Superintendents
- Develop and design learning modules with hands-on application on how to use technology resources to support teaching and learning, potentially encompassing such areas as enhancing instructional practices, progress monitoring, data collection, and assessment systems.
- Create an online resource that will focus on the completion of a Comprehensive Needs Assessment leading to the development of SMART goals, key processes, and measurable progress checks as well as a school’s mission, vision, and core beliefs.
Finance
- Review current procurement and budgeting process of textbooks and assist in determining best practices and best prices in efforts to manage textbooks. Draft an RFP to meet textbook requirements.
Communications
- Assist Communications Department in tracking and measuring WCPSS social media effectiveness.
- Draft social media posts on a regular basis to promote WCPSS, its stories, newsletter, events.
- Assist in multimedia development for social media, including photography, videography.
