How Will I Know How My Child Is Doing?
Being Involved
How will I know how my child is doing?
How do I get involved in my child’s education?
As a child enters kindergarten, it is important for the teacher to gather information about what the child knows and is able to do in order to plan an appropriate program for each individual. The kindergarten teacher gathers information about the child’s initial entry point and progress throughout the school year by using the Kindergarten Initial Assessment and ongoing literacy and math assessment.
Parent Observation Form
Parents complete this form to provide information about the child’s health history, language and social development.
Initial Assessment
Teachers conduct the initial assessment during the staggered entry days of the first week of school. Results are shared with parents. Assessments include literacy and math knowledge as well as personal and social behaviors and motor control.
Weekly Folders
Your teacher will also send weekly folders home with your child. These folders will contain notes, newsletters, PTA information and schoolwork. Sometimes notes will require signatures and responses so be sure to check these carefully.
Report Cards
Teachers will typically schedule conferences with parents of kindergarten students after Quarters 1 and 3. Kindergarten students receive Report Cards at the end of Quarter 2 and Quarter 4.
As students are promoted to higher elementary grades, parents will find that teachers complete report cards to summarize the information documented on Literacy and Math Profile Cards. It is sent home to parents at the end of the second and fourth quarters.
The purpose of the assessments is threefold:
1) to provide information about the child’s strengths and needs,
2) to provide information to parents about the child’s progress, and
3) to evaluate how well the instructional program is working.
Report cards are sent home quarterly. The report card informs students and parents about a student’s performance on the grade level standards. Grades are a summary of assessments and evidence that is collected throughout the grading period. Information related to growth, overall strengths, and needs are captured in the teacher comment section. The information on student progress gives parents a chance to assess their child’s work at this point in the school year and represents a good opportunity to partner with your child’s teacher to work for student success.
