Overview of Prevention Services
Prevention Services provides programs that support the academic, social, and emotional growth of students, and that link our families and community to schools.
We provide student support programs such as the Partnership for Educational Success, Mentoring Programs, Extended Learning Programs, and a host of other services not provided during the regular school day. Our department is responsible for the implementation of the Wake County Public School System Before- and After-School Programs and the Community Volunteer Program. Hispanic/ Latino Outreach Services is also housed in Prevention Services and seeks to provide essential support services to Hispanic/ Latino families living in our Wake County community.
We are constantly seeking new and innovative ways to serve the students, the families, and the schools of Wake County. We welcome your feedback and inquiries!

Programs
Before and After School Programs
WCPSS's before and after-school programs provide a safe, stimulating environment for students whose family situations require student supervision before and/or after the school day. Students who attend the regular day program are eligible for enrollment in the before- and after-school programs if they are five by October of the year they start school.
Community Accelerated Learning Program (CALP)
Community ALP (CALP) was established in the spring of 2000. This program offers extended after school tutorials to students at the Avent West Children’s Mentoring Program, the Boys & Girls Club at Washington Elementary, the Boys Club and the Girls Club on Raleigh Boulevard, the Salvation Army, the Walnut Terrace Community Center, the Zebulon Boys & Girls Club, the Brentwood Boys & Girls Club and Neighbor 2 Neighbor on Blount Street and at La Casita at Millbrook United Methodist Church. Tutoring takes place after school or in the early evening. The target audience is students in grades 3-8 who are below grade level. They are tutored by certified WCPSS teachers. This program is free to all participants. Funding is a cooperative effort between WCPSS and the host site. Typically WCPSS funds the salaries for the teachers, along with a modest budget for materials. The host sites provide the sites and some materials.
Communities In Schools
CIS of Wake County connects community resources with students in order to provide special enrichment and academic opportunities for students. CIS Wake works to prevent school failure through mentoring and tutoring. The primary, but not exclusive, vehicle for delivering services to students is through providing a competent, trained volunteer tutor-mentor who will spend a minimum of one hour per week with the assigned student. Currently, 12 Wake County schools have CIS Wake programs. The participating schools are Brentwood Elementary, Hunter Elementary, Millbrook Elementary, Poe Elementary, Wilburn Elementary, Daniels Middle, East Millbrook Middle, East Wake Middle, Mt. Vernon Middle, Zebulon Middle, Garner High, and Millbrook High Schools. In addition, CIS of Wake County provides academic and enrichment programs at 5 Learning Centers located in public housing communities.
Gifts to the System
Schools welcome and appreciate all donations of funds and materials that are beneficial to the education of students. Items donated are the property of the school or school system and not an individual. Of course, a donation may be designated to a particular classroom, program, or area of the school. If a donation is accepted, all donors shall receive a letter of acknowledgement unless the funds donated are less than twenty five dollars. If this is the case, the donor does however, receive a receipt for tax purposes.

Parent Liaisons
A Parent Liaison is a strategic link between the schools and the families to help build the capacity of families, schools, and communities to work together to improve children’s learning. However, since families, schools, and communities vary, the roles and responsibilities of each Parent Liaison may differ. Parent Liaisons support families in numerous ways so that they can become involved in their child’s education. Currently, there are 17 full-time, 4 part-time Parent Liaisons serving 48 schools.
Partnership for Educational Success
PES is a collaborative partnership between the WCPSS and Wake County Human Services that provides academic and family support services for students performing below grade level in 48 schools. Using family-centered practices and empowerment principles to increase family involvement, PES provides a family advocate to work with the family to develop a family action plan, to assist the family in accessing an array of student and family support services developed through community partnerships, and to align school and home efforts to improve the student's educational success. At each school, the PES process is directed by a multi-disciplinary team that may include the school nurse, social worker, counselor, teacher(s), administrator, Ready to Learn staff, Parent Liaison, Mental Health Outreach Worker, Family Support Worker, and 4-H staff.
