About Us
The Office of Social Studies exists to provide educational social science resources for students and teachers across the K-12 continuum. Students in the Class of 2010 must show academic proficiency in five End-of-Course tests; two of these are social studies subjects—Civics & Economics and United States History. In addition to showing proficiency in the two above-mentioned high school subject, students are required to pass World History, normally taken in grade nine. Students are encouraged to take a fourth unit or more of social studies in high school and can choose from a wide range of informative and exciting electives. These include Advanced Placement social studies classes, statewide electives and locally developed electives.
As a core subject, social studies is a vitally important content area which helps to motivate students to be nurtured into productive citizens of their local communities, state, nation and world. This program has a positive impact upon all grade levels, training students in history, geography, economics, political science, current events, character education and the social sciences. A social studies standard course of study exists for grades kindergarten through eleventh grade as well as goals and objectives for many other high school electives. Students must take social studies all three years in middle school. A current standard course of study for K-12 social studies, minus locally developed electives, can be found at: http://www.ncpublicschools.org/curriculum/socialstudies/scos/
Special areas of focus include:
- Inclusive staff development in social studies for teachers with a focus on reading strategies in the content area
- Ongoing and consistent communication of important training opportunities and content information to social studies teachers
- Developing and refining curriculum for secondary social studies classrooms
- Helping to facilitate Diversity—the A Framework for Understanding Poverty/MLK Dialogues Program for K-12 teachers of all content areas
- Working collaboratively with other content areas to assure excellence and curricular integration
- Internal and external customer focus—we are here to serve. Call (850-1814) or contact us with your questions
