June 15, 2006--Based on the discussions at the Board of Education's June 13 committee meeting, staff revised the criteria that will guide the selection of traditional calendar elementary schools for year-round conversion.
Changes from the previous draft include:
- Grouping of criteria according to a ranking exercise completed by Board members
- Splitting the healthy schools criteria into two parts--impact upon demographics and impact upon the instructional program.
- Revising the criterion relating to the desire of a school to convert, and limiting it to an expression of interest by school staff in converting for instructional reasons. (The existing process for requesting conversion will still allow any school community to make a direct request for conversion to the Board of Education.)
- Inclusion of availability of traditional calendar options for teachers as well as parents.
Board members will have another opportunity to revise the criteria at their Committee of the Whole meeting on June 20. After that meeting, staff recommends sharing the criteria online and in print and then inviting the community to provide feedback. These comments and suggestions would be compiled and shared with the school board before adoption of a final set of criteria on July 18.
