Build new schools
- Updated 3/24/06.
- WCPSS currently has 139 schools.
- Wake has opened 26 new schools since 2000.
- Wake will open nine new schools in 2006-07 and three new schools in 2007-08.
- New schools opening in 2006-07: Holly Springs High,
Panther Creek High, Barwell Road Elementary, Brier Creek Elementary, Carpenter Elementary, and two early-start
schools: Holly Grove Elementary and River Bend Elementary. Two additional high schools - an Early College of Health and Sciences and the
East Wake School of Integrated Technology - will also open next year.
Add mobile or modular units
- WCPSS currently has more than 1,000 mobile/modular classrooms.
- Today, 17% of students systemwide and 24% of elementary students are in temporary classrooms.
- WCPSS is adding at least 100 more classrooms next school year.
Open ninth-grade centers
- Carpenter Elementary served as a ninth-grade center for Green Hope High in 2004-05 and 2005-06.
- East Cary Middle has served as a ninth-grade center for Cary High since 2004-05.
Modular campuses
- WCPSS opened three schools one and two years early at temporary modular campuses for the first time this year.
- Next year, E19 (planning name) students and staff will start two years early at the modular campus at Spring Forest Road.
Adaptive re-use
- In 1997, WCPSS purchased the former office and manufacturing facility for American Sterilizer Company and renovated it for Lufkin Road Middle School.
Year-round calendar
- Schools on the multi-track year-round calendar can house 20-30% more students than those on the traditional calendar because three of four groups of students are in session and one group is on break at any given time.
- WCPSS has 15 year-round schools and is opening five elementary schools on the year-round calendar next year.
Reassignment
- As long as there is growth, there will be a need to build new schools. And, when schools are built, they will need to be filled. Growth=New Schools=Reassignment
