The Long View
Wake County's student enrollment is projected to reach 130,000 for 2010-11 and 160,000 for 2020-21. New schools will be required to keep up with this growth. As these schools open, student assignment plans with be revised to fill them.
The process for planning schools begins with population projections that estimate the population growth of the various areas of the county. These projections help determine school locations and the acquisition of land, as well as the facilities needed.
WCPSS is working more closely with municipalities; has hired a demographer, who works in the Office of Growth Management to track population shifts and projections and has begun taking a more long term view at facilities needed, looking towards the year 2020.
