How do I refer my child for special education services?
CategoriesDepartment |
If you believe that your child may be in need of special education services, discuss it with his/her teacher. Your child's teacher will present your child to the Student Support Team for suggested interventions or strategies that should be put in place prior to the decision for referral to special education. You will be invited to this meeting. If these strategies are successful, there may be no need for special education evaluation. If your child continues to have academic difficulty, the team may choose to make a referral for a special education evaluation. You will be included in all decisions and you must give written permission for evaluation and placement in special education services. Once the referral has been made, your child must be evaluated before it can be determined if they qualify for special education services. If for any reason, you believe it is best to proceed directly to an evaluation for special education services, you should put your request in writing and give to your child's teacher or principal. If you have any further questions regarding referal to special please contact your child's school.
