What is lateral entry?

Categories

Department

Lateral entry is a teacher licensing option which provides an opportunity for skilled individuals with proven subject knowledge skills to hold a provisional teaching license while completing the university coursework and testing requirements for holding a full teaching license.

Lateral entry licenses are issued by the state of North Carolina based on requests from the employing school system, not from the individual seeking to become a teacher. The minimum background necessary to be offered a job as a lateral entry teacher generally includes a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university, at least 24 semester hours in the teaching subject area and at least a 2.5 grade point average. A more detailed description of lateral entry requirements can be found at http://www.ncpublicschools.org/docs/licensure/lateralentry.pdf .
